This year, we have all learned the importance of having a space to call ‘home’. When we think about a ‘house’ versus a ‘home’, I like to think of the latter as being the result of adding sentimental or emotional value to a house and giving it a personal touch. When moving into a new house, it is important to construct and decorate it to your own liking so that it starts to become a space you feel comfortable in. Your home can be a sanctuary, customized to your personal specifications, if given the proper time and consideration.
As an Architecture and Design Consultant, I guide many of my clients through this seemingly overwhelming stage of owning a house that will eventually become their home. From ethically sourcing the right materials, to selecting the most functional hardware for the space, I ensure that their vision comes to life. Here are ten of the top tips I’ve developed during my career to help ease the process and enhance the results.
1. Organize your projects to save time and money.
Before starting on preparations for your new home, it’s good to know exactly what you need to buy and set a budget for your projects. Making checklists and managing your budget according to the items on your list, will help you identify the most important necessities and avoid over shopping. Gathering contacts and quotes from businesses you are interested in working with can also help you compare costs and make the best choice for your wallet.
2. Get inspiration from other projects and make a mood board.
Having a clear idea of what you want your space to look like ensures a smoother process! Sometimes inspiration can be hard to find. Online resources like Pinterest can be great sources of ideas for decoration, hardware, and even DIY. Print out photos or even create a digital mood board to envision the end result before you even start.
3. Choose your colors in advance.
In order to buy coherent furniture, you need to know the color of every wall. They are your base after all! Even beyond the walls, color can be a powerful means of binding or breaking up a space. Color has also been proven to alter mood and appetite, not to mention effect the overall visual impact of a room. Choosing wisely, in advance, can ensure outstanding results you won’t get sick of.
4. When planning a room, focus on the center piece.
Choose your center piece first, and all the rest comes in later. For example, in the bedroom a dark, heavy bedframe would set the stage for the rest of the décor and would ultimately result in a more somber room overall. The same goes for the kitchen table or the living coaches. Ensure a cohesive design by focusing on the key item first and building the room from there.
5. Pay close attention to fabric and materials.
Do proper research on fabrics and materials, taking time to evaluate how durable and affordable they are. Investing in high quality materials that will stand the test of time is a great way to save money and ensure that your décor looks fresher for longer.
6. Pay attention to your light fixtures.
Lighting is crucial part of an interior, that many forget until they change an existing fixture. It can make all the difference! Lighting can change the entire atmosphere of a room. Be mindful of windows, wall colors, and other large décor when selecting lighting fixtures. You can also research what colors go well with cool versus warmer lighting.
7. Juxtapose old and new, colorful and monotone, minimalistic and cluttered.
A good interior designed space is one with a harmonized mix of two extremes, you wouldn’t want a room to look too dull, too colorful, too old, or too modern. Have some fun with these combinations and find a happy medium between two of your favorite styles.
8. Decorate!
This might be a no brainer, but many can overlook the power of some simple decorations. Whether it be vintage collectibles or some family photographs, an interior space is nothing without nice decoration. Plants, cushions, artwork, and even funky wallpaper can massively enhance a space.
9. Add a personal touch to your interior.
Remember that the place you are designing is indeed your own. The goal is creating a cherished home that speaks to your unique story, not just living in a house that doesn’t resonate with you. Add photo frames, drawings, DIY decorations, anything that makes it personal. If you’re a new homeowner, make a space somewhere to keep all the memories to come.
10. Contact a professional online or in person.
Interior designers or architects are trained to make sure that you love you’re the way your home turns out. Discuss your ideas and visions with them, and the process will run smoothly and be just as personal. They are there to support your vision from start to finish, and make sure that your new house becomes a forever home.
